National Biodiversity Network
Species Dictionary Project

Data Manager

Starting salary from £22,000 - £26,000 p.a.

One year fixed term appointment, with possibility of extension

The Natural History Museum manages the Species Dictionary Project as a
contribution to The National Biodiversity Network (NBN). The Dictionary
exists as a public website and also services other NBN products and
partners. It comprises lists of names of organisms recorded in the British
Isles, currently numbering more than 110,000 items, and is expected to grow
substantially in the future.

As Data Manager, you will help build and maintain content for the Dictionary
and service user needs. This will include importing new lists and updating
existing ones, and will involve carrying out important quality assurance
checks such as the verification of taxonomy and nomenclature.

Other work will include managing agreements with data owners and responding
to requests for data, information and services.
You will possess a familiarity with UK wildlife, obtained through working
(for a minimum of four years) as a professional natural scientist and
through your own enthusiasm for the subject. You will have experience in
managing database applications and must be able to demonstrate proficiency
in biological nomenclature and taxonomic classification. The ability to work
on
your own initiative, assess facts and make reasoned judgements are also
essential. You must also have a degree in a biological science discipline,
preferably at PhD level.
