John F. Hunt hunt at SID.BIO.COLUMBIA.EDU
Mon Dec 21 08:17:16 EST 1998

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the
Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University to conduct
integrated structural and mechanistic studies of biomolecular
machines. Systems under study include molecular chaperones and
proteins involved in transmembrane transport. While previous
experience in macromolecular crystallography is essential, roughly
half of the research will comprise other kinds of biochemical and
biophysical analyses, especially fluorescence spectroscopy (but
previous expertise in these areas is not required). Crystals are
available for some projects. Columbia Univeristy is located in New
York City. Depending on one's congenital inclinations, New York City
is either the Capital of the Universe or the Cesspool of the
Apocalypse (so that further elaboration on this topic would be
pointless). However, post-docs at Columbia are eligible for
subsidized university-owned housing, which makes the cost of living in
the city reasonable; shared living arrangements start at $450 per
month, while 1 bedroom apartments start at $800 per month. The salary
for the position will be $27,000 per year plus full medical benefits.
It is available for one year with a likely extension for a second year
and possible extension thereafter. Applicants capable of starting in
February 1999 will be given preference. Please submit a CV including
the names of 3 referees by e-mail to hunt at sid.bio.columbia.edu.
