The Protein Crystallography Laboratory (directed by David Borhani) at
Southern Research Institute is seeking a highly motivated individual to
carry out protein purification, protein crystal growth, and x-ray
diffraction data collection. The successful candidate will possess a
B.S. or M.S. degree in chemistry or biology, and will have extensive
experience in the growth and handling of protein crystals. Experience in
protein purification and data collection is a definite plus. Ability and
willingness to travel with other lab members several times per year to
synchrotron radiation facilities for data collection is a requirement.
As all of the projects in the lab are collaborative in nature, excellent
communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
The successful candidate will be expected to work on several projects
simultaneously. Half of the effort will focus on anticancer drug design
(human deoxycytidine kinase), antibacterial drug design (Mycobacterium
avium and M. tuberculosis dihydrofolate reductase) and cardiovascular
disease (human apolipoprotein A-I) crystallography projects. The other
half will be devoted to a drug design project being performed for a
major pharmaceutical company. These projects complement drug design
projects targeted at Pneumocystis carinii DHFR and Toxoplasma gondii
hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase already ongoing in the
laboratory.
Southern Research Institute is a diversified research organization
located in Birmingham, Alabama with annual revenues exceeding $50
million. This is a full-time position (Research Associate I, II or III).
