Ok, thanks for the responses. I guess I fell victim to "more is better"
thinking. Indeed, compiling with the -64 option doesn't provide an
advantage unless a 64 bit address space is needed.
I did run into one other problem when installing CNS. When I linked with
SGI's fft library (the default), CNS failed on start up, with an error
about the fft function. When I linked CNS with the included fft code, it
worked fine. Not a big deal, I guess, but I'm assuming that SGI's fft is a
bit faster.
