NSLS Deadline is Friday the 31st

The deadline for applications for the NSLS's Summer 2003 cycle is the end
of the NSLS working day (5PM EDT) on Friday 31 January 2003. There is
also Rapid Access time available beginning about 20 January.

Six beamlines are available for macromolecular crystallographic data
collection through the NSLS General User Program: Beamlines X12-B, X12-C,
X26-C, X8-C, X9-A, X6-A, and X4-A, plus the wiggler beamline X25. Two new
ADSC Q315 diffractometer systems have been installed at X25
(http://www.px.nsls.bnl.gov/x25_info.html) and X12-B to provide
unprecedented data-collection power.

  >>> This represents a huge amount of beam time, including many <<<
  >>> days on X25, one of the most usable beamlines anywhere for PX. <<<

CCD-Based detection systems, as well as sufficient computing power that
all data can be reduced on site (and often structures can be solved on
site as well) are available on all of these beamlines.

        >> There is an electronic submission form required. <<

Please access the web site: http://www.px.nsls.bnl.gov/ for information
about the beamlines, and forms and instructions for the submission of
beam-time proposals. The deadline is very firm. Read all of the
instructions carefully and submit early.

We are offering RapiData 2003, the fifth offering of our popular course:

Rapid Data Collection and Structure Solving at the NSLS: A Practical
Course in Macromolecular X-Ray Diffraction Measurement

The course will be held 6-11 April 2003. Students could be at any level
from advanced undergraduate to full professor. 48 students will be
accepted; 24 will bring their own specimens for data collection. Please
read the course description at http://www.px.nsls.bnl.gov/RapiData2003/
and find the application materials there, the deadline for which is 14
Feb.

A New Feature this Year: We will hold a short lecture course on the
fundamentals of crystallography for roughly five hours on Sunday 6 April.
The body of the RapiData course really requires that students have a
healthy knowledge of crystallography. For potential students who have some
experience but are shaky about fundamentals, this course will help. There
will be no additional fee for the fundamentals course, but students will
have to pay for Saturday night accomodations, and food on Sunday morning
and noon.

A Research Resource Grant from the National Institutes of Health is
providing enhanced support for users to the NSLS. Work is being done
under this grant to extend the state of the art in macromolecular
crystallography in both computing hardware and software, use of modern
detectors, application of multi-layer monochromators to provide hotter
beams, and multiple-beam phasing of protein structures.
