ELETTRA is a laboratory exploiting the third generation synchrotron light
source operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility. The
extremely high quality of the machine and beam lines has set new
performance records and has been producing results of great scientific
interest. The environment is multi-national and multi-disciplinary.
Elettra currently operates one X-ray diffraction beamline jointly with
Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, and a second macromolecular
crystallography beamline is under construction. The Structural Biology
Laboratory on the site is equipped with state of the art instrumentation
for molecular biology, protein purification and crystallization.
Description:
The Beamline Scientist will join a team of physicists and
crystallographers and engage in the technical development of the facility,
provide user support for scientists from the structural biology community
who conduct research using synchrotron beamlines, and conduct independent
or collaborative research.
The Beamline Scientist will join a team of physicists and macromolecular
crystallographers and engage in user support and development of
instrumentation and automation for data collection and high throughput
processing of crystallographic data on the beamline.
Successful candidate will chose scientific projects in developing and
implementing new methods and automation for high-throughput data
acquisition and/or research areas in structural biology.
Responsibilities: designing and upgrading the optics to increase flux and
improve beam quality; conceiving, designing, and conducting experiments to
evaluate the performance of the beamline; implementing improvements and
automation for increased efficiency and high-throughput operations;
maintaining optimal performance of the beamline; documenting procedures;
performing routine alignments, energy calibrations, and beam
characterizations; providing user support by training and assisting
researchers and initiating synchrotron beamline research projects.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in physics or related discipline and postdoctoral experience.
Experience in macromolecular crystallography and x-ray optics at a
synchrotron research facility is highly desirable.
A working knowledge of Italian would be preferable, but is not required.
The salary will be commensurate to the applicant's qualifications.
Appointments will be made initially on a time-limited contract, with the
possibility of conversion to a permanent contract.
Applications will include full curriculum vitae and the names and
(electronic mail) addresses, telephone and fax numbers of three
