Gel Frag Sizer Version 1.4 March 6, 1989 Don Gilbert ("README.DOC" added 3/6/89 by Spencer Yeh for BIONET distribution) INTRODUCTION Gel Frag Sizer is a Macintosh HyperCard stack which calculates restriction fragment sizes from their mobilities. Two methods for estimating sizes are provided: the local reciprocal method of Elder & Southern or the cubic spline method. The program provides a graphic plot of the standards and unknowns, as well as a tabular output. Data from the program, including graphs, can be printed out or the numerical data can be saved to an ASCII text file. The program is both user-friendly and quite well documented with help text and literature references. CONTACT ADDRESS Don Gilbert Biology Dept. Indiana Univ. Bloomington, IN 47405 e-mail: gilbertd@gold.bacs.indiana.edu (Internet) gilbertd@IUBACS.bitnet (Bitnet) SYSTEMS SUPPORTED Mac Plus, SE, and Macintosh II. HyperCard is required. AVAILABILITY This program is available by anonymous FTP from BIONET (net.bio.net) in the directory ~ftp/public/mac/gelfragsizer or, for BIONET subscribers only, by postal mail from the BIONET Lending Library. PROGRAM FILES before un-STUFFing (177 Kb): readme.doc This documentation file. gelfragsizer.hqx Stuffed and Binhexed archive file of the Gel Frag Sizer files. (168 Kb). PROGRAM FILES after un-STUFFing: Gel Frag Sizer HyperCard stack (173 Kb). gelfragsizer.doc Original notes on Gel Frag Sizer. DOCUMENTATION The Gel Frag Sizer HyperCard stack is internally documented through the use of the HyperCard "?" button. Card-specific documentation provides a description of all of the HyperCard buttons as well as references for the two algorithms used to calculate sizes. DEARCHIVING THE PROGRAM ".hqx" files must be first un-BinHexed. To do this, use the "Other" menu within the StuffIt program to choose the "Decode BinHex File..." option or use the BinHex program's "File" menu to choose the "Download -> Application" option. A StuffIt ".sit" archive file can usually be opened simply by double-clicking on the document's icon. If this doesn't work, open up the archive file from within the StuffIt application by using the "Open Archive..." command in the "File" menu. STARTING THE PROGRAM A HyperCard stack can either be opened by double-clicking the Gel Frag Sizer icon, or by opening the stack from within HyperCard by using the "Open Stack..." option from the "File" menu.
